Outpatient Joint Replacement Q & A

What is fast track rapid recovery knee and hip replacement surgery?

Scientific studies have shown that early mobilization and minimization of time in the hospital are good for patients. In the right patient this is a very attractive and effective way to begin recovering quickly after joint replacement surgery.

Dr. Mathews has helped initiate a rapid recovery fast-track joint replacement program at Texas Orthopedic Hospital. This program is in line with a nationwide trend for same-day-discharge knee and hip replacement. Keys to a successful program are a seamlessly coordinated plan by hospital services. This includes minimally invasive surgery, the choice of short-acting and less sedative anesthetic and pain medicines, and early physical therapy and mobilization.

Even for patients who don’t leave on the same day, this coordinated care effort of Dr. Mathews’ team at Texas Orthopedic Hospital allows patients to get on the road to recovery quicker.

Having handled thousands of knee and hip replacements, Dr. Mathews offers extensive knowledge and experience in all aspects of joint replacement care.

What should I expect if I decide to be part of the Rapid Recovery Program at Texas Orthopedic Hospital?

Dr. Mathews will ask you to come in very early in the morning, so that you can be one of the earlier surgeries of the day.  At that time, you will meet your preop team and your anesthesiologist, who will counsel you on the most appropriate approach to your anesthetic for surgery.  Dr. Mathews will swing by to run through last minute details with you and to answer any questions that you have.

After surgery, you will be taken to a patient room, where you will be monitored by nursing, and where the physical therapy service will get you up and moving as soon as possible.  The therapists will come by again in the afternoon to run through things with you one more time, and then, before you know it, you’ll be on your way home!
