Hip Replacement Q & A

What is hip replacement?

Hip replacement surgery is one of the most successful and well-established medical procedures. This procedure relieves pain and restores mobility to your hip joint by removing damaged or diseased tissue and replacing it with a prosthesis.

Dr. Mathews has extensive experience handling failed hip replacements and is well aware of what works and what doesn’t. He stays current on the leading developments in hip replacement surgery and researches the highest quality tools and materials. By using low-wear prosthetic implants, Dr. Mathews ensures a long-lasting hip replacement.

Dr. Mathews is skilled in many advanced hip replacement techniques, including:

  • Muscle-sparing, minimally invasive procedures that use tiny incisions
  • Anterior and posterior approach total hip replacement
  • Hip resurfacing
  • Bone conserving techniques

When would I need a hip replacement?

If you’re suffering from a painful hip condition that limits your ability to walk, sit down, or engage in the activities you love, it may be time to consider a hip replacement. Dr. Mathews believes in a conservative approach and only recommends surgery after all other available treatments, such as physical therapy and medications, fail to improve your condition.

Dr. Mathews has performed thousands of hip replacement procedures to treat a wide range of conditions, such as:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Hip fracture/broken hip
  • Complicated hip deformities
  • Prior hip surgery
  • Avascular necrosis (AVN) or osteonecrosis
  • Perthes disease
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Hip injuries

What should I expect from a hip replacement procedure?

Dr. Mathews performs all hip replacement procedures himself at one of the hospitals he’s affiliated with in Houston. Hospital stays are typically short - one night - and even same-day discharge is becoming more and more common.

During the procedure, Dr. Mathews makes a small incision, then Dr. Mathews removes the round head of your thigh bone and replaces it with a prosthesis. If you’re a candidate for minimally invasive surgery, the incision may be smaller and your recovery time should be shorter.

If you’re undergoing a resurfacing procedure, Dr. Mathews simply places a cap on the head of your thigh bone instead of removing it.
